“My teammates are not only my friends but also my family.”Becky IrwinBECKY IRWIN Becky is 16 years old and was diagnosed at birth with TAR syndrome – a rare genetic disorder that is characterised by absence of a radius bone in each forearm. As a result of her condition, Becky often lacked the confidence and self-belief to take up sport or physical activity. As she describes it, “other children would constantly stare at me and that made me believe that my disability would always keep me back”. Following persistent encouragement from her PE teacher last year, Becky began playing table cricket through the Lord’s Taverners competition. She instantly fell in love with the game as it provided her with the opportunity to be part of a team and build lifelong relationships. A year on, Becky has become captain of her table cricket team, which represented the Yorkshire Region at the 2015 national finals.
